01 What happened
At OCP Summit 2026, Meta presented networking developments for large AI clusters: liquid cooling, multiplane GPU connections, Ethernet for accelerators and open platform interfaces. The announcement combines available implementations with next-generation previews.
02 Key details
- IcePack is Meta's first liquid-cooled network rack; its IceCube switch blades provide 102.4-Tbps switching capacity.
- In Flattened Planar Fabric, each GPU connects to eight switches through eight independent 100G links.
- Meta says Tahan is shipping today. The next-generation design with 72 accelerators per rack is a preview.
- Meta, Microsoft and Alibaba co-lead Open Switch Platform Architecture. OSPA specification v1.0 has been submitted to OCP.
- Meta announced open-source implementations of MetaRoCE, its RDMA transport protocol for AI cluster networks over Ethernet.
03 Why it matters
Engineers can explore the open-source MetaRoCE implementations and FBOSS documentation. Hardware planning should distinguish the shipping Tahan switch from the previewed next-generation design.
04 Who it matters to
Infrastructure engineers and IT architects.
